Incredible. This series gets more epic, more intense, more tightly plotted with each installment.

THIS BOOK!!!!! It's incredible even though it crushed me! these characters hold such a unique and special place in my heart! they're development is mind blowing. I want to be immersed in this world forever!
2020 Reread: I put of reading the end for weeks because I love these characters too much to see them suffer and be in pain, but I also see the threads of hope in their story! It is just fantastic!
2024 Reread: Just as painful as it has always been and I loved it so much!!

Finally! I have finally conquered my reading slump by continuing this book I put down for so long.
This may be my favorite one of the quartet so far. Helene's perspective was the absolute most glorious high fantasy thing I have ever read. The amount of horror she witnessed and survived, still having a beautiful heart through it, is jaw-dropping. Her perspective was immaculate. I must say Laia was less so, I just don't get along with characters who constantly want to save everyone (often optimists). It irks me most times, and works other times. Elias was nothing but a tortured soul in this book it was quite sad but all in all great character development.
What really stands out about this book is Sabaa Tahir's ability to write intricate battle scenes and her poetic display of the character's perspectives and souls seemingly written on the page with the deepest ink. Nothing is glossed over, nothing is not explored. And still, it remains not too descriptive, not too overbearing. My favorite thing about this series is the old fantastical militaristic style, the rage spilled within the pages, the battles that can only be told as epics, and the devastation that sings tales to come.

This was a good setup right before the last book in the series. It was so tense and defy some shocking moments and sad moments. I look forward to the final book.
