Culdesac is one bounce on a trampoline.

So I had some...feelings about the plot twist in Mort[e]. Culdesac kind of fixed it with this semi-sequel in that he did not address the problem. Which, for this novella, was a good choice! I love snapshot stories that tell moments in characters' lives. Culdesac was one of my favorite characters from Mort[e] and I love all of the context and detail added to him in this story. I'm really sad now though. Anyways, some people have been saying that you can read this before Mort[e] but I do not recommend that.

I'm torn between a 3 or a 4. Im giving it a 4 because it's a nice, quick read that stays relatively engaging enough, and I would recommend it.

Reason I might want to give it a 3 is that it just lacks any form of depth. This is the first of the series I have read, and from other reviews it seems to be more of a side story to the main, so perhaps that's where this feeling comes from

Overall, it's worth a shot. Very quick novella, but hasn't left me with any desire to seek out more in the series, although I see great potential for this author in future series.

This novella is not a full entry in the War with No Name series, but it's quite satisfying nonetheless. Focusing on the occupation of a small town by the Red Sphinx, we get to see the motivations and history behind Culdesac's brutal rise to power. The story occupies a space in time during the war that was sort of fast forwarded through during Mort(e), and indeed, Mort(e) himself features as a peripheral character. As a certain author said to me recently, "Don't be like Culdesac -- he's a jerk."

Culdesac seemed out of place when I first started reading it, as I couldn't see any way it enhanced the first book's story, but it was an enjoyable read that gave Culdesac some interesting character development. And who knows, maybe it sets up something for the second full novel?
