"This ubiquitous idea that by controlling our behavior, appearance, and whereabouts we can keep ourselves from being raped does nothing to help women (let alone potential victims who aren’t women). It merely takes the onus off the rest of society to seriously consider what we can all do to prevent sexual violence. It keeps our focus on what the victims did “wrong” instead of on what type of person rapes, or how he chooses his victims, or how we can prosecute sexual assaults more effectively. It trades on reductive, sexist ideas about how “good” and “bad” women behave and strongly suggests that some victims, frankly, had it coming." - Kate Harding in "Asking For It" (Chapter 2)

Asking For It: The Alarming Rise Of Rape Culture—And What We Can Do About It by Kate Harding is THE book for anyone who are just tired of mysoginistic people in their lives and in the internet. I got into this book because I used to have so many arguments in the comment sections of some meme page's mysoginistic posts (Yeah, I was one of those people. Yikes.) Frustrated of being called a "white knight", I decided to find books that will educate me about the mysoginy in the court system; but instead, what I got from this book was something I've never heard of before, a term called "rape culture". Now this book knows what it's talking about, it single-handedly debunked all of the sexist claims that mysoginistic men have made up for far too long about rape/sexual assault victims and it's just *chef's kiss*. It is exactly what you need to read if you are starting as a feminist, this is not some "we hate men, they're the worst" type of book, because this one also knows that the patriarchy harms men and their mindset aswell. It talks about so many topics that NEEDS to be brought up, I highly recommend reading it, it is a must-read for me.

Update 4/16/22

After re-reading it, it definitely still hits a bit, I still like it very much. Although I would've liked it more if it went deeper into rape culture and its subtle problems in our society. I think the pacing is fast and if you want a quick feminist read then this is for you, but reading it for the 2nd time left me a bit unsatisfied, I just wanted more!
