I’m a huge fan of thrillers but have to admit this novella involving drug runners on the Mexican/U.S. border was far grittier than I normally read. The characters all have flaws--lots of them--many crude or vulgar or just plain nasty. It’s kind of hard to cheer them along. There were moments that made my stomach turn.

At the same time, this was one of the most original books I’ve read in ages, and the writer knows how to weave a high octane tale. Death Karma is kind of like a bomb blast. It just keeps exploding all over the place. If you like high adventure and don’t mind characters with questionable ethics, you’ll love this book. Wally Runnels knows how to hold a reader enthralled from start to finish, and has an almost flawless ease with his chosen genre and style. That said, I’ve got to give this book 5 stars based on the author’s talent alone.

I received a gifted copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
