A romance about the President’s daughter and the Vice President’s son. Maddie is an outspoken animal activist and Jake is a war veteran who always falls in line. After Maddie gets in trouble for breaking into an animal testing facility, she is put on tour helping out veterans. Jake and Maddie never really got along as kids, but as adults there is a spark between them.

Jake and Maddie embrace their feelings for each other, but when Jake receives bad news it threatens their relationship.

I enjoyed this book for the most part, it’s a sweet enemies, to friends to lover’s story with a few agendas written in. Definitely an interesting concept because of the political ties and scenarios. My personal reading tastes are what prevented me from enjoying this book more, I’m not a huge fan of sweet romance and everything tied together a little too perfectly in the end.

I do think many readers will love this book and love the story between Jake and Maddie, it’s one that I think will hit home for a lot of readers whose spouses have fought abroad and survived. May this book be a reminder to cherish those we love and to provide more to our veterans.

*SBTB: Quarterly Challenge - November 3. Veterans Day: Read a book with a character who is a soldier or veteran.*
Firstly, if you have a book about the president's daughter getting together with the vice president's son, you call it "Running Mates". Opportunity seriously missed.
This book requires far too much suspension of disbelief. So many times I thought "nope, that's not how politics work". I'm not expecting Aaron Sorkin levels of accuracy, but this book is going to raise the eyebrows of anyone who's watched the news in the last 20 years (excluding American politics since 2016, which frankly defy reality). I was going to list each issue, but I just can't be bothered.

The writing on this was OK, not great. Too much telling instead of showing. The heroine in particular was frustrating. She was really immature. In particular when she
thought her boyfriend was "with" his friend's widow, two weeks after the friend died, because he hugs her and kisses her on the head. Like WTF. And the widow was also the heroine's friend too. Hell of an assumption to make of someone you consider your friend. They're comforting each other, not bumping uglies. FFS.

I don't thing I'd continue with this series. Political romances don't give me the escape I'm looking for.

Now this is the kind of book that I love getting into bed with – first book for me by Nicole Chase, but definitely won’t be the last! There is scandal, politics, an almost second chance romance and two people who, on paper shouldn’t have worked, but definitely did in reality (or pseudo reality as it is!)

Maddie McGuire is the First Daughter – she is in college (I never have been able to understand American College System) and we first meet her when she has been arrested *gasp* for trying to save animals from research laboratories. Now she is being mandated to do community service, building returning vets homes with Jake Simmons, the son of the Vice – President, and someone whom she absolutely hates.

Jake Simmons, returned from Afghanistan injured and definitely not the man he was previously had been. Coming back home, hasn’t exactly been the restful endeavour he had hoped for, cause his mother, the Vice-President ropes him in for her bid for the President’s chair. But when he realizes that he has to work alongside Maddie, a girl who freaking hates him, he knows it is not going to be an easy ride.

This book started off a light read – there is misunderstandings, assumptions, malicious reporters, disapproving mothers, but most of all it is their own expectations that turn this into one angsty well-rounded read.

It’s quite easy to like Maddie – she is fun, open and definitely not snobbish and artificial like you would expect a Political Royalty to be – she might be young, but she unquestionably knows her mind, be it her principles or her feelings.

Jake, on the other hand, as hero is definitely likeable – but as romantic interest he ends up actually being a pain in the tushi. He is not only unacceptable to Maddie’s concern; he is also makes the stupid mistake of taking all the decisions when a relationship involves two people.

There is heartbreak, but there is also hope – and it is this hope that had my heart warming inside out <3

This was a book that I loved getting cozied up with – a late night hot chocolate and this book, was the perfect way to spend a sleepless night with; but I wish that there had been a little depth to the secondary characters’ relationship with the MC’s like, Maddie’s relationship with her step-siblings or Jake’s relationship with his father – you get glimpses of these relationships but they weren’t exactly given their due. But all in all, this is a series I would love to see continued and I will definitely pick the next one up as when it is announced (hopefully soon!)

This was a cute, fun read that had a lot of depth and heart. I went in not knowing much about the story and I am so happy I did. I loved Jake with all his demons and flaws. And I loved Maddie, she told it like it is and had the passion and drive to help others.

My Thoughts
Like I said I went in thinking this was a light, fun, sexy read and was pleasantly surprised at the depth and the way that some of the heavier issues were handled. It was fun and easy for Jake and Maddie until it wasn't. I loved how real and fractured the story was and how their passion for each other and others was able to shine through. Even after finishing this I can't put into words why you should read it. I just know that it was a beautiful, hard to read at times, fun, sexy story that I am happy to have read. I highly recommend going into this one with an open mind, no preconceived notions or ideas about the story. It makes things much more enjoyable and fun to read that way.

It was a little unbalanced tone wise, but ultimately a fun read. I liked all of the characters and their development, the side characters, friendships, and sibling relationships were great, and I'm excited to read the next one. Another solid Nicole Chase read.
