This was a really amazing collection of essays. Irena Klepfisz writes really passionately and beautifully.
I really loved the essay "The Distances Between Us: Feminism, Consciousness and the Girls at the Office: An Essay in Fragments." The chapter is made up of writings and speeches from a thirteen year period on the topic of the feminist movement's lack of solidarity with working class women doing office work. She does a great job of highlighting instances of classism within the movement and deeply exploring the larger meaning of those interactions.
As an anti-zionist Jew, I really connected with her desire to build up a secular Jewish identity that doesn't revolve around Israel or zionism. She refers to her secular Jewish identity that is rooted in her Eastern European roots as yidishkayt. I think she is right that it is really important to build that alternative to Israel-centered Judaism, but her conception of this secular Jewish identity was very Ashkenazi-centric. I really wonder how Sephardic or Mizrahi Jews would connect with her ideas.
