This is a very interesting take on the detective novel. As readers, we are accustomed to detectives who have personal problems, personal demons they struggle with: alcoholism, regret over a failure, bad love lives, et cetera, et cetera. But after reading a whole lotta mysteries, I have to say that a private detective struggling with an unexpected pregnancy is a totally new one on me.

Olson's characters are very well drawn and very real. There are several I wish we'd gotten to understand better, like Lena's spouse Toby and her sister Rory. But she really made me care about what was happening to the people in the book.

The denouement of the book was the only thing I didn't like. No spoilers! but I thought it felt rushed, and after all of Lena's careful analysis, to have the bad guy's identity suddenly come in a flash felt like cheating.

I really hope the author writes another.

Well done

Gave it Five stars to encourage a sequel, would have been four if there were more to the series and a chance to get to know the main character after she moved on from expecting.

I really liked this. I don't normally dig on mysteries, but I like Melissa F. Olson's supernatural series and so I figured I would give this a shot. I really enjoyed it. I like her female characters that are multi dimensional and Lena Dane is the best example. You can be feminine and hardcore, you can be a badass, but still a basket case. That's what is missing in many female lead action novels, but Lena delivers.

It's official, I'm a fan of Melissa Olson. I loved her Scarlett Bernard's series so much I started reading urban fantasy. But this book is about a private investigator, Lena Dane, who finds out she's pregnant right when she takes on what should be a straight forward case about a missing person.

Although I really liked this book in the end, it started off really slow. I put it down several times but knew the author would not disappoint, and she didn't. The action picks up about half-way through, when the straight forward case leads to her being in the hospital. The book balances the pursuit of the missing person's case and her personal life drama. It's a great read, lots of unexpected twist in the case and it ends the way I wanted it to but didn't expect it to!

Worth reading!
