I read A Pedigree To Die For by Laurien Berenson as part of the R.E.A.D.S. Overdrive “Big Library Read”. This worthy program provides unlimited numbers of digital copies of one particular book to libraries around the world. So thousands of patrons will be reading the novel at the same time. Think a gigantic on-line book club. I have been meaning to participate the last couple times they had one, and this was the offering this time.
This is a mystery novel set in the world of competitive show dogs and standard poodles in particular. It was a quick read and I now know more about standard poodles than I probably want to. This was a quick novel and I would consider reading more in the series if I was looking for a quick vacation read. The plot was ok, although the plotting at times tended to drag.

I found it boring. I have read some of Dick Francis and Rita Mae Brown and find that killings that involve horses are more interesting. Horses are more expensive;people who own horses are a rich and exclusive group of people.

Killing over dogs did not seem as compelling as killing over horses.

I am reading this book because it was the Big Library Read selection for 2014. It was a quick and easy read, good for summer. Nothing overly deep but interesting to be set in the world of dog shows.

This book dragged. The action didn't really get started until like the last 30 pages, but once it did it was really good. I just got tired of Melanie's boring everyday life and listening to dog show stuff. For awhile there, every chapter was the same - Peg says something snide, Melanie drops her son off at daycare, talks about her goddamn Volvo almost dying, and then goes to a dog show where 37 different dog trainer characters act sketch (not actually 37, but it was a lot and hard to keep track of). I only read this because I have a poodle and was interested in finding a nice cozy mystery, but I don't think I'd classify this as cozy. It's not your average dark mystery either, just in some weird nebulous fluffy space in between.

I loved the dogs and the idea behind this book. But I got really bogged down by a ton of characters and details on how dog shows work.

3.5 stars. A bit of a slow beginning, but I enjoyed the dog show/dog breeding angle.

3 ⭐ = Average
Paperback.
An easy to read, uncomplicated book.
It was just ever so slightly too repetitive. Nothing much other than show dogs and breeders, and whilst I absolutely adore dogs, I would have liked to have seen other things going on as well.
