Three very different stories each illustrated by different artists. Read these to my four-year old and he preferred some to others. Understandably, he missed some of what was going on in Jo-Jo the Melon Donkey, a historical novel set in Venice but was fascinated by Conker which was about a young boy grieving for his pet dog and tackling the local bully.
As always with Morpurgo, his stories are hit and miss but I think this collection is a nice one for sharing with that newly confident reader. There is enough rich vocabulary to prompt discussion whilst not losing the reader which is a balance, I feel, that Morpurgo has always mastered well.
