This is the most impactful book I have ever read. It felt like an act of cognitive ludonarrative resistance to read it. At parts it felt like it carved me open so I could feel my own tender, soft, flesh, and at others I felt like I was a cup of water poured into the sea. This is a book for imagining community, solidarity, and a better future.

I tend to go into these short tor novellas with lower-ish expectations (looking more for fun than depth) but this was still fairly disappointing. The entire set up and premise of this book felt painfully unoriginal, the characters were not very developed or distinctive (which, yes, I get is the point it a certain extent), and the writing was fairly average. We’re left with a book that just doesn’t really have any strong selling points. I feel like it really would have benefited from some more world building at the very least.
