I wanted to like this installment of Anita Blake. There were a bunch of the things that I love about this series in there (I mean, any Edward story is great, and I do love new shifters), but also all of the things that make me tired. I'm used to the sex (in fact, I really love a lot of the writing about sex), but I'm tired of the repetition of all of the back story. I don't need to read a recap of all of the basic facts of the series. I remember. Or I can look it up, but I don't want 25% of a book I've been waiting for to be about the books I've already read. At this point, I feel like you should be able to say that there are 25 books and a Wikipedia page you could read before this one.

I was also disappointed by the sex. There's no reason to spend that many pages on subpar sex. I'm tired of descriptions of how her partners dicks are too big to deep throat unless they aren't fully erect. The whole book was a framework of some good ideas with a lot of recycled material and poor follow through. I was mostly bored.

Serpentine by Laurell K. Hamilton is a supernatural romantic suspense story with some domestic drama added for spice. It is the twenty-sixth book in Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series. This time, the main setting is in the Florida Keys where Anita’s friend and colleague U.S. Marshal Ted Forrester is set to marry his long-time love, Donna. This is supposed to be a vacation for Anita, Micah, and Nathaniel. However things don’t go to plan. Between a new form of lycanthropy, resentment among the wedding party members and missing women, this is anything but a relaxing vacation.

This book focuses on relationships for a large part of the book. Whether it is Anita’s relationships with the many men and women in her life, the relationships among the bridal party members, or friends growing apart over time; there is a lot of domestic drama. The last 25 percent of the book has the more traditional action that many expect from this series. I felt this was a welcome change. It shows how Anita and those in her life are struggling to make enough time in their lives to balance work and personal relationships. This actually made her feel more relatable.

There are some very steamy scenes full of joy, playfulness, and shared humor. But there are also violent, horrible scenes, interspecies disputes, grief, hurt feelings, desperation, revenge, love, magic, abductions, and much more.
Overall, this book was a study of complicated relationships until the last 35 – forty percent or so when it became a lot more suspenseful, action-oriented, and fast-paced.

I have read all of the books in this series up to this point and can’t wait to start the next one. They are best read in order as there is a lot of background and character development that builds over time. She brings great characters, entertaining story lines, action and romance together in her novels.

I own a digital copy of this novel. This is my honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and are not biased in any way.

This probably doesn’t deserve a three star rating. I skipped through a lot of rubbish to get to the good stuff. But the paranormal procedural elements get me every time.

Overall, the book felt rushed and the plot seemed muddled. While the overall concept was intriguing, and there is more detective work, it makes me wonder if the bleed over from LKH's personal life isn't approaching suffocating levels for her characters. Not a BAD book, but most assuredly not my favourite. There is less sex in this books than in the previous ones (for one, I am thankful), and it seems that LKH is getting back to her procedural roots, there stills seems to be a desperately needed tweak in work-life balance.

I won't rate this because I gave up about one-third of the way through. This novel is so awful that it does not even deserve a hate read. There are too many wonderful books out there. I don't need to waste time on an abysmal, ridiculous novel like this one.

I really enjoyed the setting and plot of this installment. The main mystery was fun and kept me guessing.

I really enjoyed that this book has action, plot, and a realness about it (as much as a fantasy world can). It wasn't just sex, and the few sex scenes in the book didn't detract from the story. The ending kind of threw/ disappointed me. I feel like a lot of questions were/are left unanswered. It was still a good ending, but it felt rushed. My favorite triad in this series is Anita, Micah, and Nathaniel - they are my fantasy relationship ideal. I was concerned in this book that we might lose some of that relationship dynamic. Honestly that still feels up in the air some although some reassurance is given.
