I forgot about the use of colour to reflect when Agatha's brain is being dampened, that felt somewhat emotional, seeing how grey her life was while stuck like that.

Anyway, absolutely fantastic and great fun re-reading and picking up the extra details.

Agatha Clay is a student at an engineering college, where they build and use robots. The comic starts out with her having a rough morning, running late, getting mugged, and witnessing an odd electrical disturbance. Her hidden talents, unknown even to her, start to make an appearance in this book, the first of the series, though the book is too short to get into much detail or offer much more than tantalizing hints. The world has a very steampunk vibe, and the art seems to be influenced by Disney. The art on the pages seems a little busy, with the action a bit hard to follow. The drawings, however, are fairly detailed and all in sepia and white. Recommended for grades 6-8.

Fun but short. Guess I will just be reading the next in the series to get the full story, still a tiny bit confused, like after reading just the prologue in novels, I'm talking to you Brandon Sanderson!

The problem is that, like in a few other collections that I've read, this whole first volume is just a prelude to the actual story and action and whatnot. So even though this volume is called Agatha Heterodyne etc., our protagonist is called Agatha Clay and all the questions surrounding her are obviously going to be answered by this upcoming name change. So the fact that this volume doesn't actually get that far in the story is disappointing.

A blend of steampunk and archie comics - odd and delightful mix. Clumsy Agatha that has great ideas but they don't work, a world with fictional stories that may actually be true, and a bit of a mystery.

Wacky, steampunky fun with great artwork that makes me nostalgic for Myth-adventures.
It's almost too busy for me but that fits the world.
I began this as webcomic many years ago but fell out of touch. I'll see if the desire to pursue it further sticks this time.

Ok, people. Phil Foglio was doing steampunk comics WAY before the teenagers caught on. This was published in 2001. 2001. (Yes, it needed to be said again.)

ANYWAY... So yeah, this is pretty groundbreaking. The library edition I read is printed all in brown&white, except for an excerpt of the next volume at the end. And I know this shouldn't be my firstish comment about the book, but OMG, this is SO MUCH BETTER in color. Which, I know, is a total DUH. The Foglios (which always throws me off because it's so close to "folio" and that's funny, especially for steampunk) fixed that in later editions. But in the meantime, brown and white feels pretty chaotic.

I like what they're trying to do here. Our heroine is plucky, can-do, and unabashed. In everything. There's a lot of cool technology stuff, but I felt a little like I was looking at the pictures through a screen. It was hard to get a sense of focus. All of the characters are caricatures, some of which subvert themselves. I'm not really sure what's up with the guy with the slash-mouth, though I imagine he'll be explained as the series develops.

Fun, glad I read it.
