Novella length, this is a great installment with all the fast-paced action of the first volume. There are new and scary dark 'lore' villains as well as the reappearance of Josie's vampire nemesis who is as tough as she is, making their conflicts believable and exciting. The relationship conflict between Josie and Keller felt of a little manufactured, but worked to move their relationship forward.

One aspect of the plotting kept this from being a total 5-star for me.
Spoiler They are confining the fades in a salt circle, but hundreds of people cross the circle without disturbing it? It's sort of implied that they get the people out and then place the salt, but the sequence isn't clear.

Another solid novella in the Josie Hawk Chronicles, Midnight Masque brings back Josie, Keller, Sage, and the rest of the crew for more action involving new and old supernatural threats. At the same time, Josie and Keller are dealing with more personal issues (meet the parents, anyone?) and keeping Nashville in the dark about the true nature of the world it inhabits.

I really enjoy this series and recommend it to fans of paranormal romance.
