This book tells me with so much joy at points and also so much sadness. It is a collection of short stories written by queer people of color and I absolutely loved the range of happiness and grief and fear that was throughout the entire stories. It's warmed my heart so much.

I received this as an ARC on my first Goodreads giveaway win! While a couple of the stories failed to hold my attention, the stories that got me, got me good. :)

I really liked most of the stories here, all horror shorts centered around young, queer characters. Some end well for the protagonist, others, well, at least it's not always the same "dead lesbian" trope. There's ethnic diversity galore, and the characters sound and act like real teenagers,, which doesn't always happen in YA. I'd love to put a copy of this in the trick-or-treat bag of every kid over 9 who comes to my house for Halloween. Go read--read about the scary house that's really a palace of wonder, about Terrifying Bob the mall ghost, about bad step-siblings, about very, very cute demons.

This has the same energy as 2 Bed, 2 Bath (and a Ghost) by Bug Hunter but queer.

(This is all in good fun, I did quit enjoy these stories)

1. Mc fucks up her friendship with her crush, a year after said crush leaves a note to meet her at a Halloween party held in an abandoned hotel in a forest with lots of “keep out” signs. She hates it all but doesn’t leave. Turns out, all the white rich kids whose there are trapped on the house and takes drugs to stay in the in a “dream” state. Everyone who goes in doesn’t come out. Mc’s now trapped but oh well, she’s trapped with her crush so it’s all good.

How dos a bunch of rich kids get trapped for a year without anyone noticing? How did this all happen to begin with? *shrugs* I don’t know.

2. Mc’s rushing home because it’s Halloween. Her dad and her got a ritual to do, they hand out candy and watch scary movies. Power cuts out and some spooky stuff happens that makes it seem like someone’s in the house, there isn’t, and it doesn’t matter. At midnight, mc’s dead mom shows up at the front door as a vampire, which isn’t new. Mc invites vampire mommy in because reasons.
Whose footsteps, was it? Who unlocked and opened the back door? Who turned mommy vampire into a vampire? *shrugs* I don’t know.

3. Ghosts in a drive-in cinema. Definitely racists and very "proper", one possesses the body of mc's coworker...
That's it.
Why does the dog turn into a lizard thing with horns? *shrugs* I don’t know.

4. Mc is going to a rich kids "guested" party. She's going because a year ago her sis went and she haven't been the same since, so ofc she's going to investigate. "Guested" is just allowing ghosts to possess you and let you be that person or animal for a few hours.
Mc gets caught snooping and is get permanently possessed (What she thought her sister was being, but aren’t)
What’s wrong with her sister? How the hell was this ghost thing discovered? How was plans made with them? *shrugs* I don’t know.

5. Mc a year ago gets a vicious beating, because he’s gay. Now he’s at a party, the same people who beat him is there and mc only went because his bff is dating one of the guys. Trying to escape mc ends up “playing” Ouija board with strangers. Somehow summons a demon, gets the chance to get revenge. Is yeeted back to the time right after the beating, “kills” or poofs the guys away and dies. And is like dating the demon guy or something?
Why mc’s bff such a bitch? And why she dating a douche? *shrugs* I don’t know.

6. Mc and friend dos a ghost busting in a mall’s food court. The ghost is lured with pizza (same girl same) and convinced to be a house cat to get more offerings.
What is this ghost about? Why it so willing to be a house cat *shrugs* I don’t know.

7. mc watches a video of a lady who lost her sister and if you stop watching you'll die? Or so she says. Mc is on the train with friend and watches the video where the lady takes the ashes from her sister and blends it up with an alive rat? And drinks it? And when they finish watching the video, they all die? I'm very confused and have a lot of questions. But **shrugs** I don’t know.

8. Mc definitely doesn’t want to be just a girl, so while out trick and treating with their cousins, mc gets them to an "abandoned" house. Effectively leaving their cousins in a fog? Gets greeted by an adult stranger and showed inside the house, because reasons. Turns out the old guy is the mc's future self and is magic.
Why leave your cousins behind for an unknown amount of time? Why go to the house in the first place? And are they a time traveler, a world hopper or both? *shrugs* I don’t know.

9. Mc has fire magic she can't control, it's chaotic and happens when her emotions run high. A while back she had a screaming match with her enemy, and she sets the whole classroom a blaze. Going to a Halloween party her friend is holding she's cornered by her enemy. They kiss (was very steamy) and she sets the whole place on fire. Enemy explains that they are reincarnated from an old story and destined to fight each other over and over again. And then enemy kills mc, making her remember and sends her back to the beginning of that day, remembering everything.
How come no one really considers why fires happen around mc? Or why does ice happen around the enemy? *shrugs* I don't know,

10. Mc is babysitting twins, because ofc it's twins. The twins summoned a ghost (ofc) who then traps them in the house until she's gotten a replacement. Mc calls gf to "calm down". Mc sacrifices herself so the ghost doesn’t take the twins. Gf storms in and saves the day.
Why did mc have a love confession in the middle of it? Why was the door unlocked for the gf? And why was the gf carrying a softball bat? *shrugs* I don’t know.

11. Mc summons a demon boy to get rid of his poltergeist. Demon boy takes "pronounce" as an offering, crashes a party and gets rid of the poltergeist. Mc falls for demon boy.
Why did demon boy take pronounce as offering? Why did mc leave his baby sister for an unknown amount of time? And why was summoning demon boy the answer for mc? *shrugs* I don’t know.

12. Mc is insecure and sure everyone's out to get her. She thinks her best friend is just nice to her because of his mom and that her “enemy” is just doing all these things to gloat and annoy mc. Freaky Friday happens and she jumps into her “enemy’s” body and gets her best friends to help her carry the empty body of herself home. discover her bff is actually her bff. Then gets into her bff’s body, “enemy” coming back and mc discovers “enemy” just been trying to flirt. They haul her empty body into bed and pretends to talk with her mom while in bed. She's shoved back into her own body, her mother falls and..... dies?
Paying for a kiss is kind of weird? Wtf happened to mc’s mom? *shrugs* I don’t know.

13. Dead killer clown (about time) kidnaps mc's baby brother. Mc and his crush goes into the creepy mansion to find something to give the killer clown in exchange for his brother. Finds it, gets attacked in the cemetery by weirdos who doesn’t want them leaving offerings. They leave the offering, gets the brother, and gets home to be gay.
Why does the clown steal kids? Why did they go out the window in the mansion instead of the front door? Why are there specific rules, and how did ppl discover them? And why the police so dumb? *shrugs* I don’t know.
