American Cult features over 20 artists to tell stories of various cults in United States history.  There were different approaches to narration and storytelling for each cult group.  The first-person reflection/reminiscent POV through the eyes of a teen in the Sullivanians is really effective.  While an all-knowing POV explained the complexities of the MOVE cult well.  For me, the standouts were the stories on: Warren Jeffs, NXIVM, Westboro Baptist, and the Sullivanians.  These are just a quick glimpse into the cults and only scratch the surface.  There are plenty of books and other true crime media to delve into them deeper.  There's definitely enough cults in our history for there to be a sequel book.

Any content warning you could think of is in this book so read with care.

I wasn't particularly impressed by this book. Each cult given a short chapter, some of which were interesting and some were misses. A few cults didn't go into the cult itself, assuming that you knew enough outside of this book. The artistic style was varied, and there were a few chapters that you could barely read because of the art. I don't think I would recommend this book, but it wasn't horrible.

This was a really nice, quick read that was also very educational. Cults are kind of my pet interest, so I'm always looking for good things to watch or read about them. This covered a lot of the ones I already knew and taught me a lot about ones I hadn't heard of. I also really liked seeing all the different art styles and the variety of ways the different stories were presented. My only criticism of this book would be that not all of the groups covered could always be classified as cults (some of them are definitely more out-there religions) because the criteria used by the editor (who I don't believe is an expert on cults) is kind of subjective - I think they would have been better off using the BITE model or something like that. Regardless, this was a great read that I would recommend to anyone interested in cults or likes graphic novels.
