The synopsis made me pick this one up because it suggested a great mystery. I don't see a lot of romantic suspense with an MM love interest so paired with the kidnapping and fifteen years old unsolved case it was intriguing.

Sammy disappeared fifteen years ago and left behind a mother who can't accept what happened, a brother ruined by accusations and a best friend buried in guilt because he was the one who survived.

When new DNA evidence points to Morgan, he is dragged into a drama he never asked for. Some think he is the lost boy, some think he is just a con man. And Boyd, the best friend, thinks he's just a man with enough problems without inconclusive DNA evidence.

So the story is exciting. What happend 15 years ago, who is Morgan really, what does everyone else want.. A story to get rich by, a town that's finally not identified with a tragedy, a case to be finally closed and a family put to peace by some truth?

I kept wondering when will something finally come to light but this book was basically a big tease. I don’t know what to think about it. It was amazingly written and kept me in the dark about the case until the end but at the same time nothing really happened. The case did not really move forward. The characters (except from Morgan and maybe Boyd) did not develop. The assholy behaviour in this book was so strong I really wanted to punch something with all the false and wrongful accusations.

THIS MAYBE A LITTLE SPOILERY...

And at the end.. one thing was proved that we already guessed since the beginning... and the case, what happened, who did it? No. Answers. More questions. This book was a big tease and prolouge. I hope there'll be a sequel with actual investigations and answers because now I am frustrated as hell.

Probably closer to 3.5*
I found the middle a bit slow but the start with Morgan being identified as a match for Sammy and then the ramp up of arson and the DNA results at the end were tense
Morgan was probably too far over the ass hat line for me to be fully behind him - yes, he has been thrown into a situation where he is either a miracle or the devil. But constantly butting up against authority for the sake of it did annoy after a while.
Boyd’s ever changing personality is explained by his ADHD.
But we still have who organised the witch hunt, the fires and took Sammy to sort out! Roll on book 2

This is a difficult book to rate. Partly because the MCs don't necessarily appear to be "nice guys". In fact the whole cast of characters either have issues, are damaged in some way, and have enormous amounts of baggage that they carry. Most of them either have a drinking problem, anger management issues, or are just assholes, lol. However, they might not conform to what a lot of characters in books are like but they stand on their own. T.A. Moore always does a fantastic job of making you invest in her characters, even if you don't particularly like them at first. And both Boyd and Morgan grew on me and I was rooting for both of them towards the end.

The other thing that makes me wonder about what rating to give this, is that it seems to be unfinished. Yes our guys get a HFN, but there are gaps in a lot of the other elements that make up this story. Not quite a cliff hanger, but also not a solid wrapping up of it all. Now it is the first book of a series, and I can only hope that the next one ties up some of these loose ends and perhaps even a HEA at the end of it all.

Meh - I’ve really enjoyed some of TA Moore’s other books, so I thought I’d give this one a try. I thought it was just ok - I may read the next one if there is a sequel, but I remain undecided on that. I think the problem was that I just finished some other romantic suspense novels and this one didn’t quite measure up to those. I also kept getting confused between Boyd and Morgan. As characters, they seemed so similar that half the time I wasn’t sure who was talking and they “felt” the same to me.
