This was an unexpected Nightmare story, most of the first part of the book barely even mentions Freddy and it's a new take on the story. The focus is on one girl and eventually a few of her friends who form a gang of outcasts. Around three quarters of the book had me hooked, the development of the characters and their lives in and outside High School and eventually them entering the dream world and a big twist that could be seen coming a mile off, but was still fun.
However it quickly turned into Freddy killing left right and centre and "Stephen King'd" the ending. Was a rough slog to read the last couple of chapters. All in all a great example of how you can approach a classic idea and character differently.
