Buffalo gals was a quick read for me. I enjoyed it so very much. I admit I had a hard time getting into The Dispossessed several years ago. This was was an incredibly wonderful step towards falling for this author's works.

While I found many of the stories interesting in their core ideas, I was generally a bit bored. And, sadly, I really didn't find myself enjoying any of her poetry.

A collection of Le Guin's work, ranging from short stories to poems, each with introductions by the author.  The introductions bring Le Guin's personality to the reader and her humour and humility are a wonderful thread through the collection.  There is great variety in a concise collection, with the title suggesting the recurring themes of animal and animal-human relationships, all written with the unique take on fantasy/science fiction/creative storytelling that readers expect from Ursula Le Guin.

In some ways, as someone trying to read through Le Guin chronologically, this was a little disappointing: only a few of the stories are original to this animal-themed collection, and I thought they were lackluster (not even considering the poetry, which never does anything for me). On the other hand, taken as a whole and judged on its standalone merit, the collection is quite good, as many of the stories it reprints from The Wind's Twelve Quarters and The Compass Rose are bangers, including "The Wife's Story," "Mazes," "The Direction of the Road," "Vaster Than Empires and More Slow," and one of my very favorite Le Guin stories, "The Author of the Acacia Seeds." May be better to read her earlier collections instead, but if you find this one first there is some good stuff inside.
