This book is extremely popular, but it's certainly not for everyone. I personally did not like it.

The story was sweet but got quite repetitive and vaguely trite.

Another audiobook. Can you tell I'm a junkie? I found the book pretty slow-going, yet mildly interesting. Can't say I'm on the bandwagon like everyone else, though. One plus was that it was narrated by Jeremy Irons.

A mesmerising book with a very strong theme.
I can't remember the last time that I was so in the flow of a story that I raced through it in anticipation of how it would play out in the end. Granted, this flow-state often happens when I am in the process of creating my own stories - but very rarely when reading others'.
The author ingeniously uses fiction that is heavily laden with deep philosophical questions, the main one being: what is your destiny? I appear to have happened upon this book at a crucial time in my life while under a personal time crunch to choose my 'life career'. Due to the privilege of having read this book, I am resultantly attempting to deeply tune into my heart, with the hopes that I will hear what it is trying to tell me is my true 'life's purpose'. (For everyone, of course, their 'life purpose' may not be their career - I am just such a career-oriented person that I believe a major part of my life's mission and purpose will be lived out through my career.)
A truly heartwarming story (for the feelings it stirred up in me while reading as well as the residual feelings I have been left with, five stars is not enough). It teaches us that life's offerings that are ancillary to our main purpose will either journey simultaneously with us as we pursue our true destiny, or they will wait for us while we carry it out. The book preaches that if anything gets in the way of our true calling or tries to interfere with our main life's work, they are not meant for us.
The book also touches on how people in today's world have dampened their own ability to listen to their hearts, swept up as they are in the busyness of their daily routines. As is illustrated by the example of the baker versus the shepherd, people carry out jobs that do not align with their life's purpose because they have been tempted by status, money and prestige.
This novel is an invitation to reconnect with your inner child: the beacon of light that - if you get quiet enough - will whisper to you what your true life's purpose is. A stunningly intimate insight into the human psyche and what it means to be a person. Oh, and the 'full circle' moment that occurs at the end - that made me laugh aloud with glee (along with the central character!).

Ah so yeah this is a self help book. If you are religious and like these types of things then this is for you. If you are not religious and don’t like self help books then this is not for you. I didn’t even make it the whole way through the book, it’s just not worth it to me to read such nonsense. I heard people talking about this book and really expected to be wowed, instead I got the same lessons that you can get by just picking up a bible. Do yourself a favor, skip out on this one.

More of a whimsical fable than a serious read. If you go in expecting that, you may like it better. There is no real character development or complicated plot, it's a simple tale of a boy going on an adventure and learning some lessons on the way. It's a fun and cute classic, but not something that blows me away.
