Characters you feel invested in. Great book.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Just wish she hadn't felt the need to constantly point out that Hannah was "self conscious".

Cold River
The story starts in March when Derek and Robert insult Hannah in a bar, starting off a bar fight. We are introduced to most of the main characters and learn about Hannah’s life.
It picks up nine months later, just after the holidays and a couple of weeks after Cold Pursuit. For those who haven’t read the first book in the trilogy, there is a lot of review. A lot of review. In fact, at least a good third of the book goes over what happened before. It is important for exposition but it seems like Neggers goes a bit overboard in trying to make sure that readers will know what’s going on.
The book mainly follows Hannah Shay and Sean Cameron as they, and everyone else in Black Falls, try to pick up their lives after the events of the first book. The friend that Hannah grew up with is suspected of helping the group of killers and she seems to be the only one who believes his innocence.
Spoiler
Name spelling may be off, I only heard the audiobook so I’m guessing for a lot of these.

Hannah Shay- studying to become a lawyer, this café business owner has been taking care of her younger brothers for over a decade.

Sean Cameron- a smokejumper who moved to southern California and made a mint flipping real estate. He helped Devon and Toby pick up and move out to California.

Devon Shay- the older of Hannah’s two younger brothers. He graduated after the opening events and after finding Sean’s father dead, apparently of hypothermia. Subsequent events had him trying to figure out what the rest of his life was going to look like.

Toby Shay-Hannah’s other brother, he’s seventeen, graduating soon and is going to California to train in mountain biking

Bowie O’Rourke- Hannah’s cousin, he’s been in and out of trouble his whole life and a fight between him and the three ski instructors gets him thrown into jail for 60 days and three years probation.

Vivian Whittaker- a woman with an edge. She's a social climber of sorts, happy-ish to be in Black Falls but very unhappy in her marriage, repeatedly harping on her husband. Repeated use of the word cold (as in, she feels that way) in regards to her. We certainly find out why later...

Thomas Whittaker- owns a home in Black Falls with his wife Vivian. They’re wealthy, not really a part of the community.

Ryan ‘Grit’ Taylor- former SEAL, his leg was shot off in the same firefight that got Elijah Cameron sent back home.

Elijah Cameron- Sean’s brother, engaged to Jo Harper, former Special Forces, he’s trying to help bring down a ring of contract killers

Derek Cutshaw-private ski instructor who insults Hannah and features heavily in the next book in the series

Robert Feehan-private ski instructor who participates in insulting Hannah, leading to the bar fight.

Brett Griffin-private ski instructor

This was the first book I had read in this series, and it was really good. I had read a book by Carla Neggers before and didn't like it, but I did like this one. The characters were great and the storyline was interesting. Its a short book but you get the full story, fleshed out perfectly.
