It's not amazing, but it's certainly not bad. It took a bit for me to get into it, and the writing style is definitely different than I'm used to reading, but I can definitely see it being a good read for a young teen. I'm definitely going to be finding the second one in the series, as the ending of this one really just reads like a chapter ended and a new one is about to begin. It's not the way I'd like to see it end, and the ending seems rather lackluster, but it's not bad, just different. I'd recommend a read.

Edited to add - The cover is the whole reason I picked this up. I LOVE it!

I thought this was going to be a bit twee for me, what with a grumpy dormouse, but it is a great fun stomp of a read for 11-teens (& fantasy fans) who fancy their characters a bit bolder facing their fears.
Witch hunters, demons & curses. I found this entertaining & will be looking out for book 2 as the ending implies at least one more adventure to enjoy.

A good solid starter for 10, nearly scored a 4 but not quite.

Hazel Hooper lives with her mother in a secluded forest with her magical mother, Hazel is curious about the outside world and only knows a little about it, except to know that people like her mother are hunted, killed. When a demon steals her mother her life changes and she finds that she does have magic and now has a grumpy dormouse called Bramley as a familiar.

She joins with some demon hunters to rescue her mother, but how well can she keep her secrets.

I didn't really feel like I got to know many of the characters, except Hazel and Bramley and I want more Bramley.
