I really liked this one. The first one was also good but this one felt so much more personal and raw. A difficult story told incredibly well.

In a heartwrenching sequel to Maus I, the reader enters the camp of Auschwitz alongside Art's father and sees what he experienced, how he survived, and his life after. This book had sadder tones than the first and some upsetting imagery from the Holocaust. The present-day conflicts between Vladek and his son are full of emotion and show the lingering effects the war had on their whole family. This felt like a raw and genuine sharing of family history and tragedy. A phenomenal graphic novel series for those wishing to learn about the Holocaust from a first-hand account.

Like all good Holocaust stories, this book was frightening and uncomfortable but at the same time hopeful. I liked how the narrative changed between the father’s account of his life during WWII and the son’s life. I think this added to the depth of the story, and I enjoyed being able to see how the events of WWII affected Vladek all throughout his life — from his frugality to his relationship with his neighbors. The scene where
Art and Françoise give a ride to a black hitchhiker was especially poignent. Vladek was rude to the black man, and it was interesting to me how someone who was the victim of such a horrific case of discrimination was able to go on and discriminate against others.

Conclusion to a family’s experience during and after the holocaust. Really heavy material for a graphic novel, excellent story sharing.
