Well written, interesting to learn personal details about the author and to travel with him through his stories  Gets deep into mysticism in the back half, which is intriguing but hard to know how much to take at face value.

This was my favorite book for a lot of my life, but it has not aged well.

The beginning of this book had me hooked. I found the way the author wrote to be intriguing, even if I normally wouldn’t be interested in the topic. He lost me a bit towards the end, but I think that was simply due to the fact that I didn’t have much experience or interest in the topic he became so invested in. Overall, it was a book that prompted me to examine how I engage with differing beliefs and practices other than my own. I enjoyed it.

Had a difficult time getting through this one, but it was mostly enjoyable and interesting. It's less about travel and more about personal experience, written by a man who values self improvement and discovery, and an open mind.

This book demonstrates that a person can have every privilege and yet still be unhappy. The author had fame & fortune by age 30, and was a white male in a time when privilege was less questioned. Yet he was still unhappy. It's partly because he felt obliged to demonstrate at all times that he's being manly.

The travels to Africa & Asia were somewhat interesting, but there were a number of problematic incidents mixed in.

Crichton didn't edit out the bad parts of his travel journeys, even when he was taken to some pretty nasty places. Regardless of agreeing or disagreeing with his lifestyle, there were a lot of parts of this book that really made me think and re-evaluate aspects of my own life. I didn't expect so many of the travels to be on the internal side, but those were pretty cool too. I could have done without most of the final chapter though, that seemed more for himself than the readers.

This book was just okay. Probably not worth reading.

Good. Enjoyed the parts on travel. Misleading-turned out mostly to be about metaphysical phenomenon.

"Cut off from direct experience, cut off from our own feelings and sometimes our own sensations, we are only too ready to adopt a viewpoint or perspective that is handed to us, and is not our own."
