This book was even better than the first. While there was no cliffhanger at the end, the ending made me wish that the next book in the series was out already.

I love the fact that this book has an AMAZING romance but still manages to have a driven plot separate from it. The romance between Elisa and Hector has the appearance of a forbidden love despite the fact that they both know they would be perfect for each other. It's obvious within the first few chapters that they have feelings for each other but are too afraid to confront them. Even when they both finally do confide in each other, they still hold back, which I find even more intriguing. Carson does a wonderful job of slowly developing their relationship. Even though I would have loved to see a happy ending for them in this book, the series got so much more interesting when Hector got taken away. I love the way that the characters in this book never quite seem to be able to have a happy ending no matter how close they come to one. There is always something around the corner that comes and messes things up. But it does not feel like ongoing tragedies. It seems like real life with ups and downs and never that eternal happiness.
This book is another showcase of how strong Elisa is. She makes so many more difficult and important decisions in this book that way even more heavily than the ones from the last novel. She wants to do what is best for her country and it is inspiring to see a strong woman making the right decisions. Despite the fact that she wants to marry for love and find someone that truly cares for her, she knows that she must marry for the good of the country.

I really love this series. Both are good books but it was hard getting through this one. Don’t get me wrong! it’s still good! Less action but more love!

Another really great fantasy from Rae Carson. The beginning and middle of the book has a great deal of court intrigue and politics, which I enjoyed very much. Elisa's relationships with friends and loved ones grow ever deeper in this sequel and you can see the progression in her interactions with them. Carson's world-building is excellent and, although this is high fantasy for young adults, the characters have depth far beyond their chronological years.

Carson further develops plots from the first book; there is a definite arc and continuity in her storytelling. The Godstone phenomenon is still not fully explained -- which only makes me more eager for the final book in the trilogy this August.

A Queen in Love and at War

Much better pace from the beginning. Elisa continues to grow into herself as a queen. There's a big growth at the end of the novel that comes from knowing oneself.

Solid story, a lot of adventure and a little romance.

Excited to see what comes of the conclusion.
