I found this story too unrealistic to be able to enjoy it. I kept stopping to think how unbelievable certain parts of the plot were, that I couldn't even enjoy the beautiful language (the reason for the two stars). For one, the main protagonist gains her skills way too fast. She starts training and in a few weeks to months she is as skilled, and even more skilled, than the best soldiers in the realm. It just doesn't make any sense. The characters do not seem to have their own personalities, so I feel nothing for them. I had high hopes for this, so it was a huge disappointment for me.

While this isn't a type of book I would normally pick up, as romance and YA novels aren't my usual cup of tea, I found it quite enjoyable, and would definitely recommend it to my future students. The mythology and setting are beautifully written, and once the plot starts to pick up steam, it provides an excellent  and refreshing take on the hero's journey. There are, however some aspects that did take me out of the story and (in my opinion) hold it back. The first third of the book is felt rather slow moving, with much of the story taking a backseat to the main character's melodramatic pining over the love interest. Additionally, some of the supporting characters seemed slightly one-dimensional and I found it difficult to invest in their role in the story. However, once the story begins to pick up, the reader is treated to an epic tale that feels grand in scale and invites them to get lost within.
