i will forever have a problem with (all-) white writers who make the most dangerous, aggressive, scary character the Black one. why is Selena, the second out of TWO Black characters with speech bubbles btw, the one slapping the ghost guy during their interrogation??? why couldn't Chet do it, since it was his body that was severly affected by the villain's magic?? or, better yet, why not remove the slapping altogether?? i will never understand how white writers can be so tone-deaf.

originally, i didn't finish this book. here's why:
-plot got confusing
-advice column sections were insufferable especially the "scatting" band leader. again, what is with white ppl thinking it's funny to poorly represent jazz or hip hop or any genre created/heavily influenced by Black people?

but i returned to readin' this book bc i said to miself, i said "jordan, the artwork is pretty good and i already borrowed the first three books in the series. is there any way you can give it another chance?"
and so i gave it another chance but it wasn't worth it. yeah, i completed the book but at what cost??? the plot ended very quickly with NO explanations for
1) how the villain was using magic even tho he doesn't believe in it/wants to get rid of it??? 2) how did Julie & Selena make up? it happened so quickly, almost like it didn't actually happen #SweptUnderTheRug.

Okay I really wanted to love this, and I did but I'm underwhelmed with how the ending was handled with the villain. Also, didn't really like the 2 styles of comics shared together at points. It wasn't cohesive to me. Maybe if it was the same art style or showed the main comic as the focal point on the page and in a smaller bubble the different comic? Idk but i did like the characters and the diversity among the characters, as well as there being humans and supernatural characters living in the same world.

The art work is gorgeous and fun and the characters are so diverse in their identities and in there design. I loved seeing a plus sized lesbian of color as the protagonist! The world is also a lot of fun. I loved reading the columns at the end of each chapter and the background visual gags. There were also many parts that I laughed out loud at.

That all said the story is really disjointed. There were a lot of times I thought I skipped pages when the plot progressed, but when I went back I hadn’t missed anything. So many decisions were made off page and characters suddenly had conflict that came out of nowhere. Then the whole thing wrapped up rather abruptly and I was very confused for the last 10 page.

I’m still really interested in the characters and the world so I will continue reading the series.

I've got to say that after all the great things I heard about this book, I'm rather disappointed. It wasn't terrible, but it was very mediocre. I wasn't a huge fan of the writing style or the plot, honestly. What I did love was the character diversity and the art, which is gorgeous. I think the main character's are absolutely beautifully drawn, but don't love their relationship arc.

A sweet adventure with queer and fat representation that are allowed to exist just as they are. The graphic novel is a necessary escape from stories with that representation that deal with the difficulties of living in today’s society. It is a loving and warm world that I enjoyed reading about.
