Wow. As zombie novels go, this is far and away one of the best I've read. There's solid scientific thought behind the zombification. And the main characters are riveting. The story is gripping. It's not just gore and shambling zombies. It's got mystery, intrigue, suspense, maybe romance. Wisecracks. Cool weapons. And quite a cutting commentary on the state of the news as we know it.
Can't WAIT to read the next book in the series.

I think 3 1/2 is suitable. This book feels very 2014, it’s riddled with Not Like Other Girls Vibes from Georgia, and I don’t think there’s a single woman in the book she talks positively about. Whereas 90% of the men she’s fawning over. Because of this the emotional beats that concerned her didn’t hit as hard, and I enjoyed the book more when she wasn’t there…oops. Also the problem with the plot being stretched over such a long period of time (as it has to be) is that it feels very exposition-y and like Grant is just throwing words at you. Also I didn’t remember who the antagonist was when they revealed it.
That being said, I enjoyed the ride this took me on. I think Grant mixes comedy, word building and tragedy well together. I think George makes an interesting character (even if I don’t like her), and her dynamic with the group was a bit I liked a lot. That being said…her relationship with Shaun got a little too weird for me sometimes. As someone with step siblings galore I understand my situation is different but sometimes they gave me the ick. But I enjoyed their banter too. I loved the Masons. They seem like a very complicated family, and I love how they serve as secondary antagonists from the get-go! I hope they appear in the second and third novels.
More Buffy plz thank you!
I think I’ll enjoy the second book more.

First reading review: I only give five stars to books that really rocked my world. Books that inspire me and speak to me. One of the themes of this book is living in a state of fear. This is a topic I feel strongly about. I appreciated how it was handled a lot.
Maybe spoiler.......
Something that happened near the end violates one of my usual rules of writing, but I felt that it was well in line with the genre and especially with the movies that are mentioned throughout the book. Really, I thought this book was fantastic.
Third reading review: Yep, I still love this book.

Not what I was expecting. This is not a typical zombie story, but more of a story set within a very rich and well thought out zombie world. If you are looking for a landscape populated with the shambling undead who menace and attack the protagonists you should look elsewhere. But if you appreciate world-building, horror set within believable, realistic limits, and intrigue then this might be your thing. More mystery and suspense than a typical horror story, this puts you firm in the world of alternative news reporters - namely bloggers.
