More notes to self than anything else:
Perspective shift between books reminds me of NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy, which I read before this series
Intelligence serving our hierarchical characteristic. Wish this was explored more. Just a consequence of terrestrial life? Are schooling fish considered non-hierarchical? What would a non-hiearchical human society look like? Direct democracy (though I guess that's more about the mechanism for voting..)?
How was the Mars colony holding up?
Makes biology scary and humans are trivially manipulated - but who's to say we aren't that simple.
She really gets across Lilith's feeling of disgust toward the Oankali in the first book. Also made me think that the Oankali treat the remaining humans we we would pets (cats). We acknowledge some level of a cats agency but what the human says goes.
Oankali organelles! could have turned out as bad as midi-chlorians.

If I had read only the first part of the 3 in xenogenesis, I would have rated it a 5, or more if I could. The other two parts were repetitive and far less interesting for me. Far less conflict, ethics, decisions, etc.

This honestly was hard for me to get through, I think having three books combined made it less satisfying… not my favorite Octavia Butler but still super interesting
