While Brown does an excellent job of boiling a large idea down into manageable chapters/concepts, you can tell that this book was written by a Brit. The South Asian diaspora is enormous, and there are many places where simply to point to divergence when concepts are applied elsewhere than the UK or more often might have helped. Perhaps I'm being picky given the ambitious scope, but while readable, the text didn't make me feel as though I'd been helped to see what it is we *don't* know, something a survey text might do more to acknowledge with such an ambitious scope.
