I was worried when I started this book that wouldn’t enjoy it as much as the first one. I loved the characters of the Wayfarer, so when I realised that the majority of them weren’t in this book I was a little skeptical.

Turns out I was completely wrong to be, because I loved this even more than the first one! Sidras story was really interesting, seeing how she navigated life in a way completely foreign to her, but I’d be lying if I said Peppers chapters weren’t the main draw to me.

Pepper/Janes story in this was just so good, her relationship with Owl being my favourite part of the whole book. The way their story would go from incredibly wholesome to gut wrenchingly sad was just such a great read.

Would highly recommend this to anyone, even if you’re not a big sci-fi lover!

I’m not in a huge rush to get to book three as I know it once again follows a different cast of characters, but it’s definitely on my list for this year!

This book used sci-fi tropes to portray mental health issues in a way that seemed relatable. Most of the book was pretty serious, but the topics never became overwhelming.

Hit me right in the feels. The vibes are different from the first one but still familiar. Learning so much about humanity through an alien/AI scope and i love it.

I was very hesitant for the first several chapters because I didn't realize this was an anthology series, and I loved the crew from the 1st book. That being said, this book quickly grew on me, as a story showing the mirrored stories of coming into personhood, one a cloned slave girl, and the other an ai in a person shaped body. It becomes very heartwarming as they discover passions and interests, especially as they overcome frustrations they have with personhood. I figured out the twist before the reveal, but the reveal is still very good.

DNF. It wasn’t for me. I really enjoyed the first book in the series, but this one plodded along. There’s a thread of optimism and good vibes throughout, which is no bad thing, but there is virtually no plot to string it all on. The two main characters’ parallel life stories are sentimental and sweet, but they’re almost achingly saccharine. The relationship between Jane and Owl just made me think of a daycare centre. Descriptions of what a ‘pocket knife’ is and what ‘propulsion’ means just got a bit tedious. Hopefully, the next books in the series are a return to form.
