Actual rating 3.5 stars.

I liked the three stories about Mowgli and the second to last one about the elusive elephant dance the best. This fits into the category of "white British guys writing about colonial India," which comes with its own interesting problems and characteristics. More stories about Mowgli's life would be worth reading, especially since this book hints that he eventually gets married.

Overall, I don't regret reading it.

I had always thought that Jungle book is about Mowgli but this book contains many other stories. There are many differences from Disney movie.
Kipling has got to be most reader friendly writer with such easy language and such nice humor. He gives you characters that are cute, strong and deep at same time. The animals' characters are mostly derived from their original nature - and through out the book, you shall notice use of such strong observations that could be made only by lover of animals(remember it is a non-internet age.)His monkeys are my personal favorite.

The Jungle Book is fine. It’s a lot different from the movie which focuses the story a lot. Mowgli only appears for a short time before disappearing once his story is over. The rest of it made up of various short stories about the animals in the jungle with a kind of lesson about animal ingenuity or animal morality baked in.

Sometimes there’s an overlap in animals, but the characters are pretty much confined to the grouping chapters delineated for the tale.

I didn’t like or dislike it. My strongest feeling was smug satisfaction at having finished another classic - it satisfies the supercilious, validation desperate 13 year old in me.
