Read this with my 10 year old. They were able to relate to the characters and the history was woven into the story in a way they could understand. The inclusion of anxiety/self doubt as almost an extra character, with its bold outlines, was relatable too. Great read!

As someone who typically doesn't enjoy sports stories, this was a fantastic graphic novel. It's got a great message about perseverance and friendship in Bree and the swim team (all of whom I absolutely loved - Etta, my beloved, gets a special mention for being my fav). The visual storytelling is just as amazing as the written - it's really worth it to sit with some of the panels/pages to get some of the sometimes more subtle emotional cues and clues. Plus, the art is amazing! So a win either way.

It also doesn't shy away from the real world issues both historical and current that can (and has) affected black people's access to swimming (as a sport or recreationally), and I really appreciate the added extra readings tacked on at the end to learn more about it.

This is cute and emotional. I liked the way Christmas used history to motivate the characters. It was a great method to introduce civil rights and segregation into a contemporary story about a swim team. This also touches on themes of classism, parent/child relationships, and friendship.
