Like many French authors of his time he had psychological issues on many levels. Searching for the missing piece in his life.
A true bourgeois.
Writing style critique he receuved the most is on his extravagant way of describing. In other words he needs 5pages to say 1 thing.

Somehow my first read was hilarious and awesome. 5 stars, definitely. I bought copies for everyone I knew. But then, a year later, I tried rereading it. What??? Not funny, not all that interesting, even. I still rate it a 5 star book, but only because it was THAT good the first time. Alas.
