“For women then poetry is not a luxury. It is the vital necessity of our existence. It forms the quality of light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change, first made into language, then into idea, then into more tangible action.” Audre Lord

This slim volume made me realise just how utterly lacking my general knowledge is of African history outside of South Africa and the Congo. Particularly in regards to how those that identify as queer /on the LGBTQIA spectrum are treated and perceived. This is something I’ll be looking to invest some time into so that my world history is not purely dominated by ‘western’ history going forward.

My favourite from the collection was ‘Angry black woman’ by Pugeni

If you know of other works, collections like this please point me in the direction. I’d love to find more diverse voices in poetry particularly.
