This whimsical story of love & friendship is elevated by Adams’ beautiful artwork! What fun!

I wanted to like this book SO MUCH! The bright woodblock illustrations are glorious, the tale of inter-species friendship is great, but then... Gary meets Susan, another gorilla, she loves him THE SECOND THEY MEET, and they have a baby gorilla and are never lonely again. So, friendship is not enough, hetero love is the only option, and the lady gorilla has apparently been pining for the dude-ape to sweep her up and make babies with her. BUT I LOVE PRINTMAKING. Sigh. Maybe I'll make Ray gay the next time I read it, and have the picture of his family be specifically described as a two-dad household. Onward, in my mission to queer every children's book available to me...

I mean, the illustrations (linocuts) are gorgeous and colorful, and the story is sweet, but the ending (the instant romance, the happy ending through marriage/mating) is disappointingly conventional.
