I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast-paced, action-packed thriller. I had the honor to read it before its release. My only real complaint is that I couldn't put it down! It's a great blend of a creative fictional story in a present day geopolitical post-Iraq context. Pick it up when it's published in February!

Military Thriller

Writer keeps you engaged. A little over the top in some descriptions of injuries but probably in keeping with the type of book. If this is your genre, you'll enjoy it.

A "brilliantly conceived thriller", "frighteningly real", "crackles with authenticity", "exceptional read" book this is not. Do not be fooled by the fake advance praise for this novel. It defies all credibility.

Contrary to the blurb on the jacket, this isn't even close to being a "brilliantly conceived" "frighteningly real" tale "crackling with authenticity" that is heir to Brad Thor and other well-known novelists. In point of fact, it was mildly interesting for a while, and then became simply a series of explosions, gun battles, and fist fights, loosely tied together by something that sort of passes for a plot. Character development was nil, and the only thing remotely real about it was the author's mention of actual gun models. At least he got that right.

I’ve been a fan of the action thriller since my first Robert Ludlum novel about Jason Bourne. If you enjoy Vince Flynn, Brad Thor or Lee Child, then give Matthew Betley a read.

Fast action and characters you want to pull for, I couldn’t put down Overwatch and look forward to his next novel and reading more about Logan West and his associates.

Highly recommend.

Clearly the author has knowledge of the subject matter which can be helpful for adding authenticity to the story. Or, can lead to an over detailed instructional style novel. It is more of the latter and this is what is wrong with the book. At times I felt like I was reading an operational manual. Boring. There was too much one on one, hand to hand combat that went on and on for my liking.

Logan West has something that someone else wants. Instead of asking for it nicely they take the violent option and this is the beginning of a long hunt to find out why, what and who is behind what is happening. It's all ex-special forces and highly trained killers doing battle against one another and killing innocents along the way.

It is enjoyable in parts but overall it was nothing special to me.

I received this book for free through goodreads giveaways.

While i enjoyed the actual storyline of this book, the incredible overuse of cliches was very distracting. Just about all the inner monologue and sound effects could have been deleted to make this book much much better. THUD-whoosh!!! won the prize for me. Also, the only characters you find in the book are all in the stereotypical Ex-Marine mold.

The main character continuously insists that torture works perfectly and if the politicians would just let them do what they wanted the war with terror would be won, easy as that. I would be alright with some characters having that viewpoint if others would give the obvious counterpoints but that never happened and it came off as preachy.

All that said, with some editing and a few more dimensions to a character or two this could become a good series, the storyline was compelling.

Overwatch is the first Matthew Betley book I have read. Logan West is a great character and the book keeps up a good pace similar to books by Flynn and Thor. I recommend this book!

Solid action thriller. Dialogue is a little wonky or cheesy at times. I'll probably read the next one in the series.
