More like three and a half. I got about 2/3 of the way through the 800 pages, and felt like I'd gotten far enough. its a series of loosely connected short stories, and so I came to a good stopping point.

This is a book for which the star system fails utterly. On one hand, huge, ambitious, gloriously grotesque and stubborn in its insistence that you remember your history, the real awful history that built the Americas. On the other hands, it's constantly on the verge of drowning under its own weight and frequently, explicitly homophobic. Which feels especially jarring given this books concern with history, oppression and representation.

So I'm stuck between telling you that I think this is a very important, absorbing, maybe even Great Book full of things worth reading and being kind of unable to recommend it.

DNF. I got halfway and could not commit to another 400 pages.

American epic. Buckle up. Some delicious 90s imagery, too.
