This in an excellent minimalist noir. Nothing is wasted, and there are sections of pure poetry. Think Richard Stark meets Jim Thompson, with a bit of Sallis's usual brilliant wordsmithing. I have a feeling you'll either "get" this one or you won't, but I loved it.

Nicholas Windig Refn really did a good job of taking the good parts of this book and then translating the rest into something beautiful in his adaptation. it's not that the book's bad, because it really isn't, it's just that Sallis' writing is so particular, and at times, hard to decipher, at others, just downright pretentious. the non-linear format is definitely unique in its set-up, but somewhat hard to follow, and really pulls you out of the story, making it hard to enjoy.

I found this a bit confusing the way it jumped around between present, almost present, just past.

An interesting read. I have to say after loving the film the book was a tad disappointing, with the characters and plot playing out far more engagingly on screen. Sallis' minimalistic prose lends well to the mystery aspect of the novel however, complimenting its structure well. 3.5 Stars.

Short but action packed novel. Driver is a career criminal, one that has a lethal combination of youth and wide variety of skills. He picked up a lot as a youth, everything from fast driving, martial arts, knife fighting and guns. He is cold blooded, analytical unlike other crime novel character - Parker.

But unlike Parker, Driver is person that appreciates the company - unfortunately whoever is associated with him dies rather suddenly and violently.

Very good novel, short and right on the spot. For all fans of Stark's Parker this is highly recommended.

About the Book: He drives. Nothing less and nothing more. Stunts for movies at day time, heists at night time. No details, just where, when, and where to. And still it went sideways! He tried to fix it… But you can’t expect others to have same principals as yours.

My Opinion: The story is interesting, short, but a bit tough to read. It tells a tale of a man we know as the driver. From his childhood in a chaotic broken home, to his driving talent and where it landed him, to crime business and that one job that went wrong. Tales are parallel and it’s not always clear which one you’re reading until some major detail pops up.
