I’m having a hard time rating this series: on one hand I loved it when I first started reading it a few years ago, so I feel like I should give it a high rating. But on the other hand, during this most recent re-read (because the last volume just came out), I feel like this is a fairly standard shojo romance manga. It’s definitely on the good side of the shojo spectrum, but there’s nothing about it that actually stands out all that much.

I’ll probably rate all the volumes 3 stars, except the first few and the last few, which I’ll give 4 stars.

I re-read it a few times before but this is the first time I actually finished it. It starts out strong but peters out in the last 10-15 chapters. Towards the end, I was more invested in Kai and Megu's "will they, won't they storyline."

I would recommend it if you are looking for a Shoujo manga with lots of romance and reflection, with a dash of humor once in a while. The anime adaptation is also highly recommended.

It took me a bit to get to the final books but overall I really enjoyed this series.

And there aren't many series that make me tear up but I did have a moment where I got choked up when I saw a particular spread.

Mei's loner origins to finding herself and her tribe was good to read. Plus I did enjoy the author's commentary at the end of each volume as she had her own reflections. Writing can be self-reflective and there was definitely an access point for me, as both reader and writer, in seeing the manga-ka reflect on the passing of her mother and the importance of this story.

I think we have or can have that person that "cracks" something in us. In the case of Mei, meeting Yamato and having her world slowly begin to expand. To become vulnerable. It is a scary task and somehow, some of us as we get older shy away from this.

Quoting Matthew McConaughey "Just keep living..."

If nothing else, reading this now felt like a good reminder of the importance in the company we keep. The lives we live. The choices and paths we take. The people we let in. Their significance to our growth and in turn our own contribution(s). It is through these relationship we learn more of who/what we are/made of.

This had a fairly typical ending for this type of manga. Loose ends are wrapped up and brought to a satisfying conclusion.

I remember when I first started reading this series, I was in 9th or 10th grade, basically as old as Mei was in the beginning and now, while not as old as she is in the ending, I am in my second year of university...trying to grasp this whole adulthood thing. Not gonna lie, these last volumes got me emotional, as they hit so close to fresh memories I've got. Reading the last 3 volumes was much more pleasant than I expected, and for that, I am truly grateful. This has been a lovely night.
