I’ll give it that second star for the dogs, who are the only redeeming characters in this book. I have a husband who works with students who have autism and I found the treatment of Jaime very problematic. Missed opportunity to show someone on this range of the spectrum in a sensitive way. Also ABA is dangerous and I went to college at a place where it was heavily pushed so this turned me off.
To the romance, I didn’t think there was much chemistry. I kind of didn’t care. I saw the parents dating coming from a mile away (and the speedy dissolution was obviously coming too). Just meh all around.
But let me tell you my biggest issue as a person in academia <<(semi-spoiler)>>
Of effin’ course the white guy got promoted for tenure instead of the competent woman! Here is a person who is working her ass off in a STEM field and doing important work around addiction, not problematic nonsense testing dogs, getting accolades and recognition and she is passed over for a mediocre white guy. So predictable I shouldn’t have been surprised #justiceforalanna
