The downer reviews about this book are all accurate. Very disappointed. I usually adore Bear, but this was really just being stuck inside the head of a self-obsessed, paranoid, over-caffeinated engineer who never has anything specific to say or think about the engineering she's doing, the environment she's in, or the actual tasks before her. Instead of interesting details about her world and the environment, or the tech, or any sense of texture or space, what we get is "we spent a lot of time looking for how to adjust the gravity, and we figured it out." How???????? What did you figure out?? I wanna know!
Similarly, we get reports about interactions with other characters but rarely details about those interactions. So, no fun tech, no clear sense of a world, no more than vague sketches of other characters, and, oh, Stockholm Syndrome.
I want more than just 450 pages of a hyper person feeling bad about herself. I didn't enjoy being trapped inside her head.
