The concept of this book was interesting, but the execution just fell flat. The whole book was the main couple having the exact same conversation over and over again. I got so frustrated with it.

Harper goes to the one person that knows can help her, Eric. These two characters are pushed into a world where they have to figure out who is after them and why. This was a great beginning to the trilogy, it leaves you wanting more, and gives you a cliffhanger, you want to know what happens next.

I am always always left frustrated at the end of a Lisa Renee Jones book. She owns the market on cliffhangers that pick at your brain. I am always swamped with conspiracy theories, possible plot twists, and just straight lost for how it's going to go. I feel like I've been given a book that missed the last 7 chapters- every time. Suspense, they say, a damn tease I say!

So yes, I'm ranting! But it's totally warranted. I need more and I need it now! I want answers. I want the right questions.

The Bastard has a nice edgy feel to it. I mean him. Eric is all about owning his title. Making it his. But we all know that that changes because of her, the Princess.

I am chomping at the bit to learn if she's ready to own her title.

Audiobook Review
I was hooked on The Bastard from the first chapter with its fast pace and intense emotions. The story left me eager for more, despite some flaws that would normally have me giving the book a lower rating.

My biggest peeve is that the dialogue is repetitive. It reminded me of the movie Groundhog Day. Eric and Harper hurl accusations at each other only to have the exact same argument minutes later as if for the first time. Eric accuses Harper of being “one of them”—allied with his enemies. Harper is resentful of Eric leaving her and is worried he will walk away from her.

That said, there is a ton of juicy suspense surrounding an intriguing mystery. I found myself constantly questioning loyalties and truths. Eric has a brilliant, analytical mind and the sexy confidence one expects from a Navy SEAL. Harper’s devotion to her mom, while irritating, shows just how devoted she is to those she loves. Eric and Harper are magnetic so I wasn’t surprised by the amount of sex, but I think Eric often uses it as a way to distract himself from doubt.

The book ends on a huge cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to dive into book two next.

About the Audiobook
Erin Mallon never steers me wrong. I love the passion she brings to this story. Jason Clarke. Le sigh. I’m pretty sure I could get pregnant just by listening to his deep, gravelly voice. I often cringe when I hear males impersonating female voices and vice versa, but these two are enjoyable. I value narrators like Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke who put genuine emotion into storytelling rather than sounding like they are simply reading words on a page.

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I honestly wanted to like The Bastard more than I did. However, it was just meh to me. In it, you will meet Eric and Harper. Now I'm still not quite sure what their family connection is (and I finished this book a couple of days ago). He's the bastard.. has a half brother.. and she's the step sister? So are they even really related? No idea, don't ask me - the whole family is one giant clusterfuck math equation for me and my brain just doesn't care right now.

Now the smut was good.. but the whole sibling thing (which again, I have no idea if they are or aren't) just kind of made me cringe. It's like GoT all over again. Besides the creepy romance, the drama was just so weird. It was kind of all over the place.. that I might even ask Dora the Explorer's help on finding where this is all going to end.

The characters were just okay in this book. Nothing really stuck out to me. I mean, I liked them.. but they weren't spectacular in my eyes. They mostly just annoyed me or made me cringe a lot.

Overall, I'm a bit disappointed the the synopsis and the cover of this book betrayed me. I wanted to like this a whole lot more than I did. Even the ending wasn't a good enough cliffhanger for my eyes. I might dive into it if I get it or it's free on KU.. but I honestly have no desire at this point.

Maybe it will change if the cover and synopsis are amazing. No promises though.

Bastard is full of suspense! I really enjoyed this read! The characters had great chemistry. In their Empire, Eric is the Bastard son of the King and Harper, Princess is his new stepsister! Eric and Harper’s chemistry is explosive! Their connection was instant and all consuming! One night of passion is still forever ingrained in both their minds and body’s all these years later. But will their bond withhold the Kingston’s downfall or the secrets being kept?! Somewhere between 60-80% I felt it get a little long winded and repetitive. with the why Eric came back and what he was there for. The ending has me dying to read book two! Can’t wait to see what will happen next! I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Hmmm I wasn't entirely satisfacted by this book, I found it extremely long on certain parts while the story was diluited with repetitions and repetitions that bored me.
