I picked up this book because the premise really piqued my interest. Unfortunately, I don't feel the story itself really delivered. I couldn't connect with the characters and oftentimes felt myself disinterested in the narrative. I even considered not finishing the book.

I think Yanique is a beautiful writer, but her flat characters really sunk this story for me.

I’m going to try not to bash this story because that’s just not nice…BUT I think I would’ve liked this if it was maybe a different format. Now I’m by no means a literary genius, I read for the enjoyment of books and their stories but I do feel like I’d maybe this book was in like short story form or like prose or something because you had some portions of the book written a different way and I thought maybe that meant something and then I was just super confused all together.

Now the story itself, is very complicated. It’s raw and emotional and really makes you empathetic towards other people. Lots of hard topics in this one. Would I say it’s a love story? Mmm not your typical live story. So what is it about? Lol great question..I would just go into this with no expectation and to just enjoy the literary-ness that it has to offer. The ending is like wtf, and I just walked away from the book. I really wanted it to turn around and kind of upset that’s how it ended.

The only portion I enjoyed was Stela’s story, so there it is.
