Este es uno de esos -pocos- casos en que la sinopsis de la novela se queda corta comparada con lo fascinante que es al leerla.
Un hombre mayor con insomnio intenta evitar los recuerdos dolorosos de su vida, para lo construye una historia en una realidad paralela.
Es una historia sobre amores, dolores y la importancia de la familia para enfrentarlos. Me enterneció mucho descubrir de a poco las conexiones entre ambas realidades.

Much better than the last Auster I read (Timbuktu). Heartfelt and I presume semi-autobiographical. Aren't all of his books semi-autobiographical? Hm. I don't know if the blue states would have ever seceded, though; secession is SO red-state.

Man in the Dark: A Novel by Paul Auster (2008)
Man in the Dark is more accessible than the last Auster book I read, Oracle Nights, where half the story takes place in footnotes. That said, it is still very much a postmodern novel and sometimes a bit much to wrap your mind around. It’s a story about a man (August Brill) who used to review stories for a living who tells himself stories at night when he can’t sleep to keep his mind off of the real story of his life. In one of these stories he tells himself at night, a version of the United States exists similar to ours, except 9/11 never occurred. Instead, New York seceded after the 2004 elections and a terrible civil war ensued. The main character in this story, is brought from our world to this world in order to complete a mission to put things aright. His mission, in fact, is to kill the man telling the story, to kill August Brill. It’s things like this that make the novel post modern, but at it’s heart, Man in the Dark is a love story. The real importance of the stories is how they intersect with Brill’s real life, and how he cannot use them forever to avoid his real life. In his real life, his wife, whom he divorced then got back together with but never remarried, is recently dead; he has broken his hip in a car crash; his daughter is recently divorced; his granddaughter’s husband has been murdered in Iraq; and there are three generations embodied in the three people living under the same roof. It is a love story to life, even though he is often times disillusioned with it, it is clear that Brill has loved deeply in his life, and in spite of regrets, continues to do so, now with his family and the memory of his wife.

Se precedentemente avevo reputato interessante Paul Auster, adesso, grazie a "Uomo nel buio" me ne sono completamente innamorato. Ma partiamo dal principio.
"Uomo nel buio" tratta la storia di August Brill, un ex critico letterario di 72 anni, che a seguito di un incidente automobilistico va a vivere a casa della propria figlia che lo accudisce. La vita, la realtà, è dolorosa per un insieme di motivi che colpiscono, in maniera diretta e non, la sua famiglia. Queste preoccupazioni, assieme al suo stato di salute, gli rendono difficile dormire e quindi, per cercare di distrarsi e magari anche dormire, sogna ad occhi aperti. Immagina una realtà alternativa, ambientata nei suoi giorni, dove, negli USA, è in atto una guerra civile.
Però, poiché non è possibile fuggire alla propria realtà, ad un certo punto dovrà tornare coi piedi per terra ed è qui che, secondo me, il romanzo tocca il suo climax, perché si concentrerà molto sul rapporto con la propria figlia, che ha da poco divorziato, e con la nipote, anch'essa insonne per altre motivazioni.
Scopriremo la storia dei familiari ed il tono di tutto il romanzo diventerà intimo, intenso e mesto.
Leggendo l'analisi di questa famiglia, le sue storie, i loro errori, le loro paure ed i loro sogni, mi sono ritrovato a leggere di me stesso, del mio passato e delle mie speranze. Ed è questa la magia di Auster, tra le varie cose. I suoi romanzi, da un certo punto di vista, sono autunno e malinconia, tonalità calde che cullano fino a quando non siamo pronti a procedere e ad affrontare ciò che abbiamo lasciato attendere, si raccontano a noi mentre ci raccontano di noi stessi.
Alla fin fine la storia parallela è quasi un MacGuffin atto ad esplorare la vita di August Brill e di coloro a lui legati ci sono momenti che potranno fare più o meno male, in base all'esperienze vissute da lettore, ma il tutto si conclude con una certa speranza attiva, quindi nessun Deux Ex Machina pronto a salvarci ma un decidersi di prendere in mano la propria strada per percorrerla agendo su ciò sul quale abbiamo controllo.

Beetje ontgoochelend; het zijn meer twee kortverhalen die in één roman werden gebundeld, maar zonder al te veel samenhang. We zijn meer gewoon van Auster.
