Good ideas, but terrible writing and lame characters. And everything is way too easy for them, too. It's not good policy, plot-wise, to have every problem be easily fixed by magic (or something of the kind)--much better if good guys have to struggle and suffer a bit. As it is, it's kind of hard to imagine how the evil Duke ever seized power, if it was so easy to get rid of him. I mean, who walks into an evil mine/prison, and five minutes later has a perfect plan for getting all the prisoners out, which works perfectly despite needing insane degrees of coordination from a lot of people and the elements? And the book keeps on like that; hardly anything ever goes wrong for the good guys, and if it does, it's quickly fixed or turns out not really to be bad, after all.

Another book I read in middle school that I picked up again as an adult. This one I did enjoy more as a child but it was still wonderfully fantastical.

This is my favorite children's book of all time, despite the fact that no one has ever heard of it. It's out of print, which makes me sad, so I buy old copies to make sure I'll always have an intact copy (my original paperback is falling apart from rereading so much)
