I saw this book on @amodelwhoread Youtube channel and I was really intrigued: sleep paralysis demon, dark fairy tales and fables ? That seemed great ! The story follow Kai, a wolf who is (for whatever reason) in a man form, Miya, a young woman and Mason, a surgeon who is in a quest to debunk the town's superstitions. I enjoyed reading this book but I had to admit it was a bit underwhelming sometimes and I was not really attached to the characters.

I think the writing was maybe the thing I liked the less in the book. It was not bad per se, far from it ! But I had a lot of trouble getting immersed in the story… I which there were more descriptions of the town, the woods etc. It was maybe a bit too focused on the characters and the fantastic part of the story to be really grounded in reality.

Okay, so the story follow three main protagonist: Miya, Kai and Mason. I had to admit that I had a hard time getting attached to them for some reasons.

First, Miya: I loved how strong headed she was and how she was not having any of Kai’s bullshit. However, I think she was not developed enough. It is said that she is a struggling student but we have absolutely no scene of her working on homework or things like that… for me she was reduced to the “a bit strange and completely fearless girl”, which is a shame because she had a lot of potential.

Then, Kai… I loved than even if he is in a human body you can see the wolf talking all along. However, I’m really not a fan of his character… he is quite creepy towards Miya (even if she puts him in his place quite quickly) and overall a bit of an asshole. I did not hated him but for me he was just “meh”.

Thirdly, Mason. Overall I liked his story and the whole “I want to be pragmatic, there must be a scientific explanation to all of this”. However, he is a bit naive and I felt like he was there mostly to explain the legend of the dreamwalker to the reader.

Finally, I would like to talk about the romance between Kai and Miya… it was really too fast

”You’ve strayed too far from the flock again, lambchop.”

This book was such a unique read and I loved it! This is very much story focused and the romance is minimal so don’t pick this up expecting tons of smut.

I was constantly trying to figure out the underlying mystery of who everyone is and how they’re all connected with their “I vaguely remember you but idk from where” moments and the final reveal did not disappoint.

There were times throughout the book where things seemed a little vague and disconnected, but overall it was an enjoyable read. I also thought the book length was absolutely perfect, there was no unnecessary fluff which is so hard to find lately. The story is so interesting and unique and I can’t wait to see how this duology ends!

The novel had interesting moments, but on the whole, it missed the mark for me. I was expecting it to have a little more mystery/thriller elements that weren't there. The plot centered around a mystery, but I didn't find much of it engrossing and the twists and turns weren't shocking.

I did enjoy Miya and Kai's storylines and how those storylines talked about mental health. The focus on mental health was appreciated and I liked the interactions between those two characters. The premise itself is very original and the cover art is beautiful, but the ending doesn't quite live up to expectations.

2.5⭐️ just not it for me. I did like the atmosphere…The dialogue would take me completely out and felt very juvenile at times. I liked the dreamscape, but it was a little too late fitting all that in the last 15% of the book. I realize they were in the dreamscape at other points, but nothing really moved forward until that last 15%…

I’ll start saying that this novel combines Young Adult literature and Gothic fiction pretty well. There was a supernatural, horror feeling in all of the chapters, which increased the more I read, and the more I read the more I liked it. It was the perfect vicious circle, something it’s been a long since I last experienced.

I absolutely loved this book through and through. If you were a fan of the show Haven, Supernatural or really loved Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, then this duology will probably fit your vibe, extremely well. The mystery and the lore weaved into the story is so intriguing and a breath of fresh air for the urban fantasy scene. Miya is also such a highly relatable character especially if you've ever felt like you're constantly on the outside looking in or just wishing for a little bit more magic in your life. And Kai? My oh my, the things I'd do for that man and let him do to me lol but seriously new topper for the list of book boyfriends and he is here to stay. I can't wait to see what's next for these two.
