I thought the plot of this book was interesting, although very slow to unfold and a bit redundant at first. The change in perspective between Daisy Dalrymple and DCI Alec Fletcher was an interesting narrative format. I found I enjoyed being able to bounce between the two. The book lost a lot of steam for me when Daisy makes an executive "justice" decision on her own at the end of the book. It felt like an undermining of her character development and a cop out. The general sense of noble privilege and doing a solid for another member of the aristocracy was very off putting despite the image Ms. Dunn created of Daisy breaking the aristocratic mold. I'm going to try Book #2 in the series in the hope there's some character redemption but mostly because I loved DCI Fletcher's character.

I didn't find the book particularly compelling as a country house mystery; the murder wasn't resolved particularly cleverly not was there any narrative tension surrounding the reveal of whodunnit. The historical part was quite well done, with broad historical accuracy so it was nice that that didn't take me out of the story.
The ending was somewhat egregious in my opinion
leaning on class and power to avoid any consequences despite the established views of Lord Went water. Daisy's plan wasn't even clever to fix every thing

I listened to this as an audiobook and i really enjoyed the story. It's sort of Poirot meets Downton Abbey. I love murder mysteries so i thought this book would be perfect. On the murder mystery front it was okay, it's not the best i've read but it was not terrible at all. I did like the main character, it took me a while to get my head around the story, i felt there were so many characters that it took me half the story just trying to piece together who was who and how they were all related. Saying that it was still a nice story if a little underwhelming. If you're looking for a great murder mystery story this isn't exactly the book i'd recommend, there's definitely better ones out there.
