GIRL! What in the toxic masculinity did I just subject myself to? Like. This was trash. I don't know anyway to see this novel other than some sort of dark wish fulfillment by the author of their idealized self as a fucking misogynistic violent thug.
The cover said it was an unflinching and unflattering view of modern Italy but girl I was not prepared for this dantean journey into some fucking hoodlum's mind. I am going to need to inject bleach straight into my brain.
And the writing isn't terrible but it is literally a story of a terrible and violent man continually succeeding in his life of violence and crime and I just don't see the point.

Ugh. Former criminal-turned-fiction writer Massimo Carlotto is the literary equivalent of Guy Fieri’s hair. His blocky, uber-masculine, prose is reminiscent of an angsty teen boy’s short story about his “total bitch” of an ex-girlfriend and drinking Coors Light with his bros. This novel is fucking detestable. From its sexual politics to its clunky plot. The female characters are reminiscent of Beaker from The Muppet Show, relegated to bleating noises and too stupid to be human. Good god I must be a masochist to have finished this shit.

Brutal. Reminds me of Richard Stark's venerable Parker character, but without his "honor among thieves" moral compass. There is no shred of goodness in this protagonist whatsoever.
