So I'm reading the Tigress series in a completely out of order fashion, but hey, it's all making sense regardless. Shi Po seemed to me a frightening, bitter hag scorning the 'ghost people' in the previous Tigress books but here Lee has humanised Shi Po a notch or two, thank goodness.

Frustrated that she cannot become Immortal, Shi Po is determined to end her life for she sees there is no other way otherwise. However, her husband Kui Yu is determined to not have her leave him and their sons just yet. Although he has near no knowledge whatsoever of Shi Po's Taoist rituals, he is a quick learner and soon master.

Certainly such an intimate relationship between two Chinese in such an historical/cultural setting is extremely rare (if at all), but Lee gives it purity and humility in ways that don't sully it any lower than deeply loving and spiritual.

Probably it would be beneficial to read [b:Hungry Tigress|873329|Hungry Tigress|Jade Lee|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1179092702s/873329.jpg|858689] prior to this.
