This poetry collection is one that Roxane Gay recommends.  The poet takes the reader through personal experiences of her parents’ illnesses and death.  She also explores her diverse heritage of descending from a Nigerian Muslim and Black Southern Baptist.

The poet also explores what is to be “Un-American”.  She does this brilliantly through poems regarding the deaths of Sandra Bland, Eric Gardner, Tamir Rice and Mike Brown.  Another way she explores this theme is through poems using words viewed as American i.e. pledge of allegiance and war on terror.

This a great collection that can be reflected upon and read time and time again.
